The next carol has been chosen by our Manager, Angie. She has chosen “In the Bleak Midwinter.”
In the bleak mid-winter
Frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron,
Water like a stone……
Last verse is:
What can I give him?
Poor as I am
If I were a shepherd
I would bring a lamb……
The last line is the most poignant: Yet what I can I give Him – Give my heart.
Angie comments that “Christina Rossetti has long been one of my favourite poets. She wrote it in 1850 during a particularly hard winter. She had no idea her poem would be set to music or later sung as a carol, which expresses the wonder of how, in a desolate out-of-the-way corner, when life itself would be so very hard that God comes to us as a frail baby.”
